The secret to an effective sound bath lies not just in the skills of the practitioner, but also in the bowls being used. They work in tandem to create the resonating sounds you are bathed in. Choosing the right bowls is not a simple process. I find that the tones which truly envelope you in a sound bath emanate from a set of crystal bowls curated with a focus on composition, tone, pitch/frequency, octave, binaural beats, and healing properties. The right combination of bowls makes for harmonious intervals that enhance the meditative state, align chakras, and impact the endocrine system.
Composition, Tone and Healing Properties
Unlike a piano or violin, crystal singing bowls cannot be tuned to reach a note; rather, the sounds they produce are born during the manufacturing process. Most crystal singing bowls are composed of pure clear quartz, which amplifies intention. My bowls are alchemy singing bowls, which means they are not just made of clear quartz, but are infused with other crystals, gemstones, and precious metals, such as gold and palladium, or gemstones can be added during the manufacturing process to enhance tonal qualities and healing properties. Each crystal carries its own distinct energy, which should be considered when trying to align specific intentions during the sound bath. The quality of the crystal is also important, as higher-quality crystals will emit a more pure, resonating sound that lingers for more powerful results.
Notes, Pitch/Frequency and Octave
Crystal singing bowls come in a variety of notes that match to the musical scale – C, C#, D, D#, E, E#, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, and B#. Certain notes relate to the different chakras of the body and/or the endocrine system.
I chose bowls which create both major scales (a musical pattern with a series of whole steps and half steps that creates upbeat, happy sounding music) and minor scales (a musical pattern with a series of whole steps and half steps that create a more somber or melancholy sound).
Different singing bowls produce different notes, and some bowls even play multiple notes, creating their own single chord or binaural beat. The size of the bowl usually determines the note’s pitch/frequency and octave. Smaller singing bowls generally emit higher pitches and octaves, while larger bowls create lower ones. Similarly, the bowl size impacts the intensity of the vibration. Bigger bowls produce a deeper vibration, which can be more grounding, while the higher pitch of smaller bowls can reach the higher chakras. The size, shape, and material of a singing bowl will determine its pitch/frequency, which plays a significant role in a sound bath. Certain frequencies can entrain the brain, allowing it to relax and become more focused.
Binaural Beats
When you hear two different tones with slightly different frequencies at the same time, the brain interprets the two sounds as one beat, giving it an entirely new frequency. This is called a binaural beat. Some sound bath practitioners, including myself, may use binaural beats to tailor frequencies to create a specific mental state. Not all bowls can produce binaural beats. When choosing my bowls, I made sure to include options that can do so to offer enhanced benefits to my clients.
Healing Properties
The composition of the bowl, the tone it emits, along with pitch/frequency and octave, all relate to its healing properties. Some bowls guide the heart to inspire the mind. Others help with harmony, inner peace, serenity, and relaxation. There are a host of healing properties crystal singing bowls produce. The key is to have a variety of bowls that allows you to tap into each as needed.
